Dear Friends, Family, and Anyone Else Who Will Listen,

Please take a moment to reflect for a second. Take a walk into your child’s room and just glance over and count how many books are sitting on their shelves just waiting to be read. Notice, how many of them have never even been opened yet. Look at how many books they have outgrown, that are still just sitting on that shelf, probably not to be opened again for a long time. Now think about all the kids in the United States who do not have this luxury. According to US Census Bureau, 12.7% of people live below the poverty line in America. Meaning, they can barely afford to put food on the table, let alone buy their children books. So approximately 61% of families that have low income, have zero books in their home. But, why does this matter to you? Is it not your ethical responsibility to give back to the community, to ensure that those who are less fortunate are given the same opportunities that you have?

Well I am giving you a chance to fulfill that ethical responsibility because of a service-learning project that my college composition class is a part of. We are trying to help a local organization, called Bridge of Books, give that 61% of kids with no books, something age-appropriate to read. Bridge of Books’ mission reads,

“To provide an ongoing source of books to underserved children throughout New Jersey in order to support the development of literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.”

You can help them accomplish this mission by giving even just a small donation! Every little bit helps, so please give back to the children who need it most.
