Dear Family and Friends,

Do you remember what your favorite book was when you were a child? Or maybe even the first book that was read to you? 

Or do you remember reading books before going to bed? I, as well as many others, remember reading books at some point as a child. 

But, think about not having books in your childhood. Or not having been read to as a child? What kind of impact would that have on a child's mind and development. 

Many children in New Jersey are unable to say they own any books of their own.

As a result of this, their own literacy level begins to decrease, which ends up damaging children for their entire lives. 

My English Class at Monmouth University is participating in a service learning project with an amazing organization, called Bridge of Books. This nonprofit organization collects new and gently-used books to distribute to multiple school districts in NJ, in need of books. 

Did you know that more than 50% of FOURTH grade children in the state of New Jersey, are not reading proficiently?
