Think back to when you were a kid. Do you remember having your favorite books that never got old? Those books that you could read over and over again, never gettng tired of it? Sadly, children all accross America are unable to have these feelings because they are unable to access books. The leading cause of illiteracy in America is poverty, in which widely effects the population. It is an unfair advantage for those who are able to afford a large amount of books for their children, in which is why the bridge of books foundation was created. Donating to the bridge of books foundation will allow the volunteers of the program to buy books and distribute them out to poverty-struck school districts and even specific families.

Why is Literacy Important?

People are unaware of how important it is to read as a child. There is a large correlation between poor literacy as a child and their future accomplishments. Those who are illiterate, or one who barely is able to read and write, are more likely to be unemployed as an adult than someone who has been reading their entire life. Reading as a child not only helps them grow as a student, but as an overall individual. Literacy helps children gain a sense of the world, and strenghens their imagination. For every 300 children in poverty struck communities, only one has access to books appropriate for their age. This is an obsurd statistic, and there must be more done to help those who are less fortunate. Everyone deserves a chance for academic success.

How Can I Help?

The Bridge of Books program is a volunteer organization that supports local schools and families in the state of New Jersey from kindergarden to 18 years of age. Donating even the slightest amount to the Bridge of Books can give one child a book, which could be something they've never experienced before. Help be the change, and create an equal opportunity for academic success in the United States.
